Victory Opens Swim Season
The Maine West tankmen opened their 1978 season on Mar. 3 with a victory over Niles East on both the varsity and freshman levels in a dual meet.
For varsity head Coach Scott Chovanec, it is his third season at the helm of the Maine West swimmers. Coach Chovanec and his swimmers have a simple goal for 1978: to improve on the record of last year‑more specifically, to place at least third in conference, which was the best finish for Maine West set last year. Also important is placing high in districts and qualifying as many state competition.
At the Elk Grove Invitational Maine West placed third out of six teams. The Warriors were one point from second and only five from first. Maine West was leading in points until the final event, the 400‑yard free style. However, the Warriors took four out of 10 first places. The medley relay team consisting of Randy Roel, Pete Falstad, Rob McNab, and Kurt Altergott took first place. individual winners were Randy Roel in the 50‑yard free style and 100‑yard backstroke and Kurt Altergott in the 500‑yard free style. Roel swam a 23.2 in the 50‑yard free style. He was also the meet's only triple winner.
"We have too many gaps in the free style events that give us an unbalanced team," exclaimed Coach Chovanec. The Warrior tankmen host Proviso West this Wednesday starting at 4:30 p.m.
