New Cheerleaders Amazed, Tired

Sophomores Barb Cutaia, Barb Georgans, Shirley Helms, Joyce Lesniak, Nancy Merret, and freshman, Patty Kargas cheered their way through the cheerleading finals, September 15, into the new Maine West frosh-soph squad.

After three days of hard work at the cheerleading clinic supervised by the varsity squad, 29 girls entered the preliminaries held September 14.

The judges were Andy Adolf-son, editor of the WESTERNER; Anne Kulik, treasurer of Student Council; Ed Luzietti, sportsmanship chairman; Carol Peterson, representative of Girls' club; Carole Romano, captain of the varsity squad; Miss Mae Engen, faculty; and Miss Pat White, Algonquin school.
Newly selected cheerleaders were judged on their pep, voice, co-ordination, personal reactions, cheer personality, and school representation. Contestants were graded on a point system ranging from one to five.

Shirley admitted, "I really didn't think I was going to make it. Wanting to be a cheerleader more than anything else, I was made the happiest girl in the world!"

"I was so stunned when I made it that I just stood there with my mouth open. I was in doubt because there was so much competition, but was so happy I couldn't even talk!" said Joyce.

"I was so excited and happy to be chosen," Pat exclaimed. "that I jumped up and down with joy.
