Boys Join In Campus - Life
During the summer vacation, three students from Maine West entered several different colleges to study a college course. They are Randy Baselt, Murray State college; Alex Dickison, Southern Illinois; and John Saari, the University of Chicago.

Randy Baselt, senior, spent eight weeks at Murray State in Kentucky. He left Des Plaines on June 12 to study a course in biology. While there, Randy realized what it was like to be at college. "At Murray I found out about campus-life, and how really different it is from high school. I am now determined more than ever to continue my education after graduation."

One of the most interesting weeks of Randy's vacation was spent at the University of Indiana, where he took a course in band training. At the university was band leader, Stan Kenton, who lectured on music.
"While at Southern Illinois, I really got a fine understanding of what college was like," remarked Alex Dickison, senior. Alex took two courses, one in geography, and the other in geology.

Both Alex and Randy were sent to college by the National Science Foundation, who awarded them scholarships for achievement. Alex also attend. ed the lectures by Mr. Kenton at Indiana.

John Saari, the only junior to attend a summer college program, took a course in first year college mathematics at the University of Chicago. Also, for six weeks, Mr. Norman Ladd, math department head, commuted by train to the university. Mr. Ladd was striving to obtain his second master's degree in mathematics.
