Thinclads Overpower |
||||||||||
| Warrior varsity harriers romped over a visiting Glenbard East team, 23 to 36, last Friday after school. Maine West had 19 thinclads who beat the Bard's fifth runner and earned points toward their letters. In cross country meets the low score wins, as each finisher is counted on a direct ratio of points for places, with the first five members of each team comprising the score. New this year in the scoring system is that after seven men have finished from either of the teams, the other team gets place points until the team has a total of five places registered. Under the scoring system of years past, the Warrior thinclads would have won the meet by an even greater margin, 23 to 51. The Maine West home course starts out by taking the runners around the outdoor track, then around the outside perimeter of the fenced-off field, followed by the run around the athletic field and back around the track to finish in the "chute," a distance of nearly two miles. |
West's first finisher was number one runner, Ed Stedman. He ran the course in 11 minutes and 20 seconds, a new record. Other Warrior finishers in the top 10 included Frank (11:38) Schwartz, fourth; Mike (11:54) Canar, fifth; Sig (11:55) Weiler, sixth; Paul (12:04) Eisenbacher, seventh; Will (12:13) Battles, ninth; and Bob (12:14) Jonas, tenth. Others who finished ahead of the Bard's fifth man included Don Seagren, Wayne Roberts, Bruce Berlet, Ed Luzietti, Bill Sloss, Lee Wolf, Pedro Martinez, Tom Carlin, Al Wankat, Bill Crowden, Tom Meike, and Jack Mercer. Tonight the harriers travel to face a rough Proviso West team, composed mostly of seniors, as last year's team had only juniors in a three-year school. |
