Candidates, Students Prepare Campaigns |
||||||||||
| Very soon Maine West will again be the scene of late strategy meetings, early morning hail skits, strewn tags, and half asleep candidates who spent the evening before preparing last minute speeches. Candidates running for the office of president and secretary of Student Council will be introduced at a pre-election assembly on March 30, during third period, while juniors and seniors will attend the assembly seventh period. Candidates for president of Maine West's Student Council are Joe Figard, managed by Mike Callaghan; and Bruce Johns, managed by Dan Wiberg. Secretarial hopefuls include Marilyn Manny, managed by Karen Fischer; Bev Pawelko, managed by Cookie Phillips; and Gail Schellin, managed by Sue Frasier. Election Week The week of April 10 to 14, has been set aside as election week and the final election assemblies will be held during first and second periods for juniors and seniors and seventh and eighth for freshmen and sophomores on April 13. |
Voting will take place in the student lounge on April 14, during lunch periods and before and after school. Only those students who previously registered will be allowed to cast a ballot. Voting booths will be used for the first time in Maine's history; the purposes being to encourage good democratic government, to prepare the students for future voting privileges, and to place the responsibility of voting on the students. Bruce Schellin, chairman of the organizations committee recently commented, "I encourage the students to get out and back the candidates they feel are best qualified for president and secretary. When you vote, do not let their popularity, skits, or campaigns influence you but look for the leadership qualities which will make them good representatives of your school." The ballots will be counted by the president, secretary, organizations chairman, and faculty adviser of Student Council. The new president and secretary will be announced at the Jitney to be held on April 14 from 8 to 11 p.m. The cost of the Jitney will be 25 cents, school clothes are in order, and dates are not necessary. |
