Finalists Chosen For
Girls', Boys' State

To represent Maine West this year at Girls' and Boys' state are the newly elected representatives Gretchen Rider with Marilyn Manny as her alternate and Joe Figard and Lee Wolf with Vie Oakley and Henry Schure as their alternates.

Before spring vacation one junior girl and two junior boys from each U. S. History and summer school class were nominated by the U. S. History teachers and voted on by the students to receive this honor.

Of the eight boys and six girls that filled the final ballot were Walt Eppler, Joe Figard, Rolfe Gustus, Joe Mitchell, Victor Oakley, Henry Schure, Lee Wolf, Skip Wortman, Mimi Foss, Tomi Frazier, Marilyn Manny, Mary Anna Matteson, Donna Pipenhagen, and Gretchen Rider.

Girls' and Boys' state is paid for by the Des Plaines American Legion auxiliary and the Park Ridge Daughters of the American Revolution.
June 20-27 is the week when these new representatives will display their ability in citizenship. Last year's delegates were seniors Karen Barrett, Bruce Murdock, and Dan Wiberg.

Girls' state is held at Jacksonville, Illinois, at Mac Murray college, and Boys' state is held at the Springfield Fair grounds.

Purpose of Boys' and Girls' state is to give those selected students, from all over the state of Illinois, experience and training in city, county, and state government.

The first thing done at these "states" is to elect city officers, county officers and then representatives to their own Congress.
