| Ways of teaching the American youth about Communism and the teaching of the philosophy of Communism in the classroom was the topic of the Seventh Annual National Military and Industrial conference held April 10, 11, and 12, in Chicago at the Sherman Hotel. Teachers attending the conference from Maine were Mr. Verne Brownell, audio visual director; Mr. Gaston Freeman, history instructor; Mr. Glenn Hoffmann, history and English, and Mr. Otto Kohler, social science department head. Student observers were sophomore Carol Barrett; juniors Steve Farmer, Mimi Foss, Don Mathieson, Mary Anna Matteson, Kathy O'Grady, Henry Schure, and Vicki Webster; and senior Kathy Clayton. |
Educating students on Communism has long been an item of controversy, but several high schools have adopted a program which gives the student at least a basic idea of Communism. The cause of it is furthered when "trained Communist leaders are allowed to play on the untrained emotions of the American youth." Uneducated youths are dupes for Communist propaganda. Admiral Arleigh Burke, Chief of Naval Operations, summed it up with these words. "If we set a good example for our youth, the future of our country is in good hands." |
