Girls Picked for Cheering
Juniors Marilyn Alfini, Sandy Mustradi, and Carol Nagel, and sophomores Barb Cutaia, Barb Georgans, and Shirley Helms were chosen from fourteen girls in the cheerleading finals held April 28, to represent Maine West's varsity squad.

After three days of cheerleading clinic, April 24-26, twenty-two girls entered the preliminaries that were held April 27.

Mike Callaghan '61, senior class president; Mike Kunkel '61, "M" Club member; Sandy Guido '61, varsity cheerleader; Carole Romano '61, captain of the varsity cheerleading squad; Miss Pierce, physical education teacher; and Miss Pat White, faculty member from Algonquin Junior High school, were the judges for the preliminaries, April 27.

The judges for the finals were Adam Berg '61, "M" Club member; John Hanek '61, Student Council president; Carole Romano '61, captain of varsity cheerleaders; Bruce Sehellin '61 organizations committee chairman; Miss Joyce Buck, Miss Corinne Clark, and Miss Pat White, faculty.
Contestants were judged on their pep, co-ordination, "cheer" personality, personal reactions, and how they would represent Maine West.

The junior girls who competed in the finals were Marilyn Alfini, Sharon Fogelquist, Carol Nagel, Jane Mountford, Sandy Mustradi, Karen Patterson, Roberta Schorr, and Maureen Verber; sophomores were Barb Cutaia, Barb Georgans, Shirley Helms, Sue Hume, Joyce Lesniak, and Nancy Merret.

"With all the competition I didn't expect to make it!" exclaimed Shirley. "I couldn't believe I made it because I goofed!"

Marilyn confessed, "I just couldn't believe that I made it! I had just given up hope when Annie Kulik called, and I was so happy that night that I couldn't sleep!"

"There's just one word to ex-press the way I felt when I found out I had made it - surprised" relates Barb Cutaia.
