Jim Wins N.M. Scholarship

Jim Edwards '61, was selected as a National Merit scholar, according to an announcement received this week by Principal Herman L. Rider. Honored among 1100 throughout the nation, Jim will receive a monetary scholarship to the college of his choice.

The National scholarship competition began last spring when thousands of high school students were started out on testing programs.

This field was narrowed down to 10,000 semifinalists and then in December, 1960, only a relatively small group of students survived the next test. The selection committee, a panel of experts in academic selection, nominated Jim for this honor from among this select group of finalists.
In naming Jim as a National Merit scholar, the committee evaluated test scores, high school grades, creative achievement outside the classroom, qualities of leadership, school and community citizenship, extracurricular activities, high school officials' endorsements, and similar data made available by school officials.

As a Merit Scholar, Jim is eligible for a scholarship stipend which could run as high as $1,500 a year, or $6,000 for four years. In 1960, the average stipend paid to freshman Merit Scholars was $827, or about $3,000 for four years. T h e amount of each scholar's stipend, based on need, is kept confidential.

Jim's scholarship is being underwritten by the American Brake Shoe foundation, which has 48 plants in the United States and four in Canada. Next fall, Jim will enter Northwestern university, where he will major in chemical engineering.
