Maine Racketmen Host State

Evanston, defending state tennis champions, will head the list of racket squads that will meet at Maine West, Saturday, May 6 for the annual District Tennis tournament.

In varsity competition last week, the Warriors picked up one victory in two starts to bring their record to 2-6. They edged out Proviso West 3-2 and were crushed by Glenbrook 5-0.

An attempt to avenge last year's 4-1 defeat was muffled last Thrusday when Proviso invaded the Warrior hunting ground in a non-conference contest. Bill Sopper '62, 6-1, and Terry Albers '63, whipped his third singles match 6-4, 6-4. In first doubles competition Joe Figard
'62, and Scott MacDonald '62, were defeated in a heartbreaker 10-8, 6-4, while Jim Edwards '61, and Joe Menger '61, easily trounced the Proviso second doubles twosome 6-3, 6-1.

The Westmen traveled to Glenbrook last Saturday only to be sent home with no more Interim points than they had when they left. At first singles Bill Sopper looked impressive but was still outclassed in a 6-1, 6-0, defeat. Ron Longhurst '61, at second singles made a game attempt in a 6-1, 6-2 turnback. Curt Arhling was edged out 8-6, 7-5. At third singles the first doubles team of Jim Edwards and Joe Menger were out-dazzled 6-2, 6-0 while Joe Figard and Scott Mac Donald were being driven back 6-2, 10-8.
