| BY Dibb & Down Coach Nyren's frosh baseball squad stands, at present, with a 1 - 1 conference record. Engaged against Deerfield in the seasonal opener, Nyren's nine sank the Deerfield Giants 5 to 1. The highlight of the game was a two-hitter hurled by Maine's Les Jannush '64. Undefeated in their last three games, Coach Kennedy's sophomore team looks very promising this year, although two top - notch pitchers, Al Waters and Ed Schwenke, have been benched by injuries. WEST GREETS SEVERAL new student teachers to the physical education department. We wish to welcome Coaches Don Bragg and Brad Snyders. Mr. Bragg has coached baseball at Northbrook College in Chicago and has served on the coaching staff for the baseball and basketball squads at Trinity College, Chicago. Mr. Snyders was |
voted most valuable player on last year's basketball team at Northwestern university. Congratulations are in order for two Westmen who recently put in a fine showing at the Maine East fieldhouse. Art Steele '61, boosted the present fieldhouse pole vault record to 12 feet, 5 inches, adding almost one-half foot to the old record. Dennis Luzinskj '61, for the second time, tied the indoor track high hurdle record. DISASTER WAS AVERTED because of a quick-thinking bus driver when, coming home from the Blue Island tennis meet, the bus' left rear wheel came off the axle abruptly. If the driver would have applied the brakes, the bus would have rolled over, causing serious injury. The tennis team did it again last Tuesday when Coach Roy Kearns and five members of the frosh-soph net squad were "forgotten" by Coach Al Carstens and his fun-loving baseball team. |
