Joe Mitchell '62, Wins Awards at History Fete
"It took a minute or two to sink in; it was kind of hard to believe," revealed Joe Mitchell, '62, winner of this year's Constitution contest. First runner up was another member of the class of '62, Mary Anne Matteson.

Every year around this time the American Legion sponsors the Constitution contest, which consists of a written test and an oral exam. The oral exam, which consists of five questions, two fact and three opinion, is given to the seven top scorers one at a time, and takes about 10 minutes.
The winner receives a $100 scholarship towards the college of his or her choice. Northwestern or the University of Illinois are Joe's choices.

"The questions themselves weren't hard, but it was answering them that was hard. Of course being in the room alone with the five Legionnaires who gave the test didn't help any," according to Joe.

The last part of the test was given Wednesday night, May 10, between seven and nine. As soon as everyone had been tested the winners were announced.
