| Errors, walks, hit batsmen, and the shutout hurling of Warrior senior John Reese all combined in last week's District baseball play to bring Maine West to a tight 2-0 victory over the Maine East Blue Demons. Coach Al Carstens' diamondmen were eliminated from all State baseball play on the following day, Wednesday, by the Nilehi Trojans, 2-0, but retained their grip on the Interim League top position with a 5-3 victory over the cellar-dwelling Wheaton Tigers on Friday. Here are the Interim League varsity standings: |
Halpenny Hit The "home" team West Warriors got started in a bad way in the Maine East District baseball play, as Warrior leadoff batter Doug Halpenny got hit by a pitch and had to be removed from the game. Halpenny was one of two hitters walloped by the Demon pitcher, Steve Benson. Gene Sieb started West's scoring in the second with an inning-opener walk; George Amundsen walked, and catcher Leonard "Butch" Bending popped out for the first out of the inning, with Gene Ciezadlo having bunted safely in the meantime to load the bases. Rick "Weasle" Warnicke drew the third walk of the inning for a run-batted-in, but Bruce Murdock popped out and Mike Rowlee grounded out in the infield to end the inning with only one West tally. John Reese kept the powerful Maine East offense at bay, and Carstens' nine pushed through one more run to cushion Reese's slim lead. West's second runner crossed the plate in the third after Dan Humay struck out to open the inning. Reese aided his own cause with a double to center, and reached third on Sieb's infield out. Amundsen was the second Westman hit with a pitch, and Reese came across the plate on an error by the Demon third baseman on a ground screamer hit by Ciezadlo. Bending grounded out to close the inning. During the game, Maine West got four hits, one single by Ciezadlo (a bunt) and one by Humay; Warnicke and Reese each drew doubles, with Warnicke sliding in at second on a tight play. |

| Maine West put Glenbrook into third-place as they whipped them 7-1 Tuesday night. The Westmen are assured of a tie at this point and can come away with a clean title by wins in their last two games. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
