| Track coach Ed Smith's high flying cindermen raised their unbeaten record of the 1961 track and field campaign to 12 and 0 with a nifty 721/2-451/2 victory over previously unscathed Prospect on the Prospect field. Four days later the Warriors scored 19 points, qualified boys in five events for the state track meet, and finished in third place behind champion New Trier and runner-up Highland Park in the district track meet at Evanston. 11 First For West Led by firsts victories by Denny Luzinski, Ray Leonardson, Art Steele, and Ron Albertson, and by single triumphs by Ken McLaughlin, Vie Oakley, and the mile relay quartet, W e s t 's triumphant Warriors easily ran past a "supposed Prospect threat," 72 1/2 45 1/2. Hurdler Luzinski kept in tact with his specialty by over coming all corners in the 120-yard high and 180-yard low hurdles. Senior sprinter Roll Alberston raced to a :10.1 timing and a victory in the 100-yard dash, followed moments later by his win in the 220-yard dash in :22.6. The third Warrior to double was junior Ray Leonardson. Leonardson's jump of 19 feet 71/2 inches was far enough to capture top honors in the broadjump, as was his :53.3 clocking in the 440-yard dash. Eisen bacher and Dave Madison of West finished second and third in the 440 giving MW a sweep of that event. |
Art "High Bar" Steel glided over 5 feet 6 inches, after tying Flynn of Prospect in the pole vault at 11 feet 6 inches. Next on Maine West's long list of victories was Vie Oakley's 880-yard run triumph in the time of 2:03.0. Runner-up to Oakley was Lee Wolf who had never before run the half mile in a meet. Wolf's time of 2:04.4 was excellent for a first try. West weightman Ken McLaughlin got off this best throw of the season by nearly a foot, with a toss of 54 feet 91/2 inches, easily winning the shot put. The 11th and last Maine West win was the final event of the day, the mile relay. Composing that winning team were Oakley, Eisenbacher, Madison, and Wolf. 3d In District Paced by "High Bar" Steele's second and tie for first, Maine was able to place third in the District track meet at Evanston last Saturday, beating out 18 schools. Steele leaped 21 feet 9 inches on his last jump in the broad-jump, falling short by one inch of the winner. Steele later climed over 12 feet 3 inches in tying an entry from Palatine and Prospect in the pole vault. In all, Steele garnered eight of West's 19 points. |
