Long-awaited Week For '61 Arrives
The week that seniors have been looking forward to for four years, ever since they entered the big doors of high school as shy little freshmen, is finally here. The whirl of events began on June 2, at 9:00 p.m. when the Maine West cafeteria was transformed into a medieval garden for the long-awaited Senior Prom. The transformation was under the direction of Renee Benson and John Maruska, co-chairmen. The knights and their ladies danced to the music of Jay Kenny and his orchestra amid the royal colors o an olympian court. The student lounge and patio was representative of an ancient castle dining room and the entrance was enhanced by a castle facade and moat. Following the prom the couples dispersed for the "Late Date" train ride or to a Chicago night club.

The Commencement Sermon (Baccalaureate), held on June 4, at 3:00 p.m. in the Maine East fieldhouse, was the next big event on the senior calendar. The sermon was given by the Reverend R. K. Wobbe of the Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church, Des Plaines. This was the first chance for the seniors to wear their robes and march as they would for graduation. Junior girls acted as usherettes.

The following Tuesday, June 6 (today), was the Honors Assembly. At this time the departmental awards, given by each department to a deserving senior in that department, were distributed. These awards have been announced throughout this issue of the paper.
One of the most memorable events for a senior is the Senior Brunch, which will be held on June 8, at 11:00 a.m., in the Maine West cafeteria. Under the direction of Dianne Lyon and Dick Wisniewski, co-chairmen, the committee has arranged for the brunch, entertainment, and the announcement of awards. The entertainment consists of Lynn Kania on the piano, Sid Miller doing a monologue, Carrie Perez dancing, Holly Peterson and Gail Windmeier showing their "acting" ability, Rusty Urso and the Choraliers singing. Jim Scott will MC the event.

The climax to the senior week, and also the climax to four of the most enjoyable years in a student's life, is graduation night. It will be held on Thursday, June 8, at 8:00 p.m. in the Maine East fieldhouse. Jim Edwards and Chuck Weber, co-valedictorians, will both give speeches. The Senior class president, Mike Callaghan, will give the farewell address.

From this point on, the class of 1961 will be only a memory in the minds of the men and women who will embark on separate roads of life. Some will continue their education at colleges across the country. Others will continue their education in the services, business schools and/or jobs. No one will cease to learn just because they have graduated; for commencement means a beginning. Future events on the calendar for the class of 1961 will be the many reunions which will be held at various points in the coming years.
