| Defeating arch-rival Prospect 2-0, May 24, Maine West's diamondmen, under the management of Coaches Al Carstens and Gaston Freeman, clinched the Interim Leagues varsity baseball crown, in their first year of competition in that loop. Led by the four-hit shutout pitching of ace hurler J o h n Reese, the Warriors were able to get to the Knight hurler for tallies in the second and third innings, while holding the Prospect batsmen to zero. |
West's championship Warriors ended their successful season one game in front of second place East Leyden. The Eagles were the only conference team to beat or tie West. Playing regularly for the Warriors this season has been Mike Rowlee at first base, Bruce Murdock and Dave Larson at second, Dan Humay, at short, Gene Ciezadlo at the hot corner, Doug Halpenny in leftfield, John Reese in center when he's not pitching, Rick Warnicke when he is, George Amundsen or Warnicke in rightfield, Butch Bending behind the plate, and John Reese pitching. Bob Lorentz, Larson, and Chip Allen all saw mound duty for West at one time or another this season. |
