| Fast readers were being sought all this week by their English teachers. The reason for this was to find eligibles for the new Sigma Chi Sigma honorary society to be formed at Maine West. Any student who shows ability to read either 500 words or better per minute will be invited to become a part of this society. The only stipulation to this speed of reading is that there must be a comprehension of over 80 per cent. Miss Marjory Johnston, reading director at Maine West, is in charge of the school's reading program. "There were about 35," informed Miss Johnston, "who attained |
high rates of reading speed last year." Each student in every English class had a chance to participate by reading for four minutes some fiction material. He was then tested on comprehension with 10 questions. The Maine Township schools have embarked on an ambitious program of developmental read log this year under the direction of Dr. Earl Wiltse, superintendent, and Mr. Robert Frost, assistant superintendent. With the cooperation of administration, teachers, and students, the program will assure measured advancement in students' abilities. |
