| What, read 500 to 1,000 words per minute? You're kidding. No, surprising as it may seem to some, there are students, 84 in fact, who have read at that rate of speed. This fact was discovered by a new club called Sigma Chi Sigma. This club, under the direction of Miss Rosemary Case at Maine East and Miss Marjory Johnston at Maine West, is an organization for students who are able to read at a speed of 500 or more words per minute with 80 per cent comprehension. MEMBERS ANNOUNCED Students who attained membership are seniors Norm Boyer, Pat Bolden, Gerry Dettman, Beverlee Engle, Ron Finchum, Sue Frasier, Ruth Gembecki, Doug Halpenny, Bill Heller, Tanya Hostetler, Anne Kulik, Diane Lavine, Kay Lonsby, Judy Mayer, Jim Meyer, Christine Nelson, Jim Olson, Dan Olszewski, Lance Pearson, Pam Schoentgen. James Scott. Sandra Seller, Rosemary Sherry, Gerald Stanowicki, Marolyn Taylor, Linda Thomas, Joan Tippereiter, Marcy Tuttle, Al Wankat, Dick Williams, Sandra Wittman, and Daniel Wolski. Charter members for the 1,000 word per minute are Alan Barski, junior; Jim Edwards, senior; Paul Mika and John Sime, freshmen. DESIGN KEYS A key contest was held to find a design suitable for membership pins. All entries were to be turned in by October 14 and judged last night. The judges were Mr. Barker, reading development chairman of both Maine East and Maine West; Mr. Stilp, art department chairman of Maine East; and Mr. Meyer, art department chairman of Maine West. Students submitting designs were Gail Benes, Chuck Kasmus, Virginia Morrison, Dick Nedwed, Janet Virostko, and Bill Young, freshmen; Ken Wolfgram, sophomore; Jens Brasch and Tom Kuersten, juniors; Ruth Gembecki, Donna Grassman, and Linda Klug, seniors. Students who read 500 words per minute will receive silver keys and students who read 1,000 words per minute will receive gold keys. "Any student," urged Miss Johnston, "who would still like to try out for the 1.000 word group may come to my room any time after school next week." |
