Gridders Late Surge Topples 'Brook Warriors, 14-7

West's varsity gridders upped their won-loss record of the current season to three and two, by ruining Willowbrook' s homecoming, last Saturday, 14-7, after losing to an undefeated Prospect eleven, 13-0, the week before.

With the Willowbrook victory, Maine's conference record now stands at two wins, two losses. They are situated in fourth place, one-half game in back of third place Proviso West.

Against Willowbrook, the Warriors seemed unable to penetrate the 'Brook 20-yard line on account of fumbles, during the first three quarters. But after Willowbrook put over a TD early in the fourth quarter, resulting directly from a West fumble, Maine appeared to wake up and move. Dan Humay connected with Chuck Well twice for long gains, that put the ball on the Brook one yard line. Keith Connolly then bulled over for the touchdown on the next play cutting the lead to 7-B. Chuck Badalamenti booted the pigskin through the uprights knotting the match at seven-all.

Six minutes later, West drove 84 yards in three plays for the final tally. Wlllowbrook was forced to punt when they were stopped on the Maine 45. Connolly took the punt on his 12-yard line and was smothered on the 16. On the first play
from scrimmage, Ray Leonardson, with two beautiful blocks, twisted and turned 25 yards to his 41. Weil, in a reverse, carried the ball 41 yards around his right end to the 'Brooks 18. Then, Humay faked his way 18 yards into the end zone putting Maine ahead to stay, while Badalamenti converted again, making the final score 14-7.

In Prospect's defeat, the War-riors won a moral victory. Up to that time, Prospect had averaged 36 points per game, and allowed only two first downs on the average, defensively. The Westmen garnered only two first downs . . in the first half. The second found the West gridmen collecting a total of 101.

The Knights scored both their touchdowns in the first half on runs of one and five yards. The second half found Maine's defense doing a fine job. They kept the massive Knight line from pushing them back, while they were holding the speedy backs to short gains. The Warrior cause was hurt as Interim scoring leader, Connolly, was unable to play, because of an ankle injury. The final result of the contest might have been different if the powerful back had been able to play.

On October 28, the West gridders play Leyden East on the Eagles' gridiron. Maine West's homecoming is the final game of the season, November 4, as the Warriors host Wheaton high.
