WEST'SPORTS

Current West gridiron sensation Keith Connolly (who is a senior) will be Coach Gaston Freeman's only returning basketball letterman. The team, besides playing their regular schedule including a full slate of Interim association games, will compete in the Pontiac Christmas tournament. This is the oldest Christmas tourney in the state.

Teams to see action at Pontiac include Alleman (Rock Island), Anna.Jonesboro, Bloom, Clinton, Edwardsville, Jacksonville, LaSalle-Peru, Lincoln, Lockport, Maine West, Pontiac, Princeton, Richwood (Peoria), Springfield, Wautseka, and Waukegan

A rough field.

The frosh football team has been looking good recently. Two weeks ago the yearling team lost to a previously unscored-upon Glenbrook team by only one point, 14-13. Volker Engel scored both West TD's, and Cal Lewis garnered the extra point. Last week the fresh walloped Highland Park, 33-0. Engel scored four times, and a Lewis to Dave Aegerter pass accounted for the remaining touchdown. Assistant freshman coach Dave Kennedy, remarked, "We looked pretty good even in the mud."
Previously mentioned Keith Connolly may be Maine's claim to fame in the Interim scoring race. Connolly, along with Gene Whitehorn of Willowbrook, is on the top. Each player has 24 points with a four-TD record.

While on the subject of football, West's linemen could be given a slight pat on the back for their recent excellent offensive and defensive work. Guys like Charlie Badalamenti, Mike Kunkle, Larry Ladendorf, and Rich Samlow do a lot of work for the ball carriers.

This weekend's Interim football includes the Maine West Leyden West junior varsity test set for 7:30 tonight at the East stadium. Proviso West also has a game, slated for 6 p.m., at Wheaton tonight.
