One Letterman Heads West Basketball Team |
||||||||||
| Head basketball coach Gaston Freeman's bucket squad starts practice Monday, November 7, in "A" wing gymnasium, in preparation for their opening game at home against Blue Island, November 25. Freeman will be in charge of the varsity team, with Gene Zuccarini the junior-varsity head. Walt Hommerding is coach of the freshman-sophomore squad, while Bob Schmidt will manage the affairs of the freshmen. Tomorrow in "A" wing gym, there will be an organizational meeting for all basketball candidates on all four levels, at 10 a.m. Because of Interim Association rules, no winter sports can begin until the fall sports have ended, thus making next Monday the first day of practice. Forward Keith Connolly is the only letterman back from last year's squad, which sported a 10-win, 10-loss record. It might be noted, however, that seven of the Warrior defeats were by one to three |
points. Some seniors who saw action last season returning are letterman Keith ConnoJly; Bruce Shriver, center; forwards Mike Rowlee and Doug Halpenny; and guards Bruce Murdock and Ron March. Maine West will compete in the Interim League for the first time this season. The Westmen are also entered in the Pontiac Christmas Tourney, December 28-30. This is termed one of the toughest tournaments in the state. The Warriors will play all their home games in Maine East's fieldhouse, as they did last year. A change in the playing activities finds the junior-varsity contest in the preliminary slot instead of the frosh-soph match. Coach Freeman commented on the team's chances with, "We will have an aggressive squad. We'll be a lot tougher under the boards than last year, and I think we will have a good season. Our main defect is the lack of height. Connolly, at 6' 2" is probably the tallest boy on the team. |
