Gridders Topple Quincy |
||||||||||
| Maine West's varsity gridders upped their won-loss record to four and three, by dumping Quincy's Blue Devils, 26-19, October 21, and losing to East Leyden, 33-0, last Friday. Tonight, the Warriors windup their first season as they tackle Wheaton's Tigers in West's first homecoming. The varsity game begins at 8 p.m., while the junior-varsity's kick-off is at 6 p.m. The East Leyden defeat dropped the Westmen into a fourth-place tie with Glenbrook. Both the Warriors and the Spartans sport two-win, three-loss records. Against Quincy, the Blue Devils built up an early lead of 13-0 in the first half. |
When the seemingly "lifeless" Warriors started the second half, it looked like a different team. While holding the Blue Devil machine to a few scant yards and one touchdown in the entire second half, the Warriors tallied four times. Junior Ray Leonardson scored twice, one on a short run and the other on a 23-yard pass-run from quarterback Dan Humay. Humay himself scored one of the TD's. It came as a result of a West drive deep into Quincy territory, with Humay slicing over for the score. West's final tally came in the capable hands of Dave Larson, who bulled over from the two-yard line following another Warrior drive. Chuck Badalamenti converted twice, giving Maine the contest, 26-19. |
