Snowy Winter Driving Presents Many Problems |
||||||||||
| (Editor's note: This is the first of a series of articles on driving safely.) The feather-like flakes of snow fall rapidly down to form large drifts on the road. The traffic is moving slowly; a turtle could keep up with it. The world is silent and unrealistic. In one car we have Mr. David Kaplin, lawyer, driving home from his office. Whew! The case I am taking up now is going to be a tough one. I wonder how Mr. Jones could have prevented the accident he was involved in. I'll have to ask him if he had tested his brakes at low speeds to determine the breaking power of his car before he started out. I hope he did, since that is so important for safe driving. Snow certainly takes care of the bad drivers. There goes some silly creature speeding around that sharp corner and there is a stop sign just around the turn. Does he intend to stop while driving so fast? It just isn't possible !o stop quickly on roads like this. |
Oh, well, I can't worry about other drivers and their ignor-ance at this moment. I have to think of Mr. Jones and his little skidding adventure, If I had a vision that he was going to have an accident, what would I have tried to impress upon him so he would have known what to do in order to prevent the casualty? First of all I would have told him,., whoops! Now my car is skidding. Think! Don't apply brakes, but take foot off of accelerator gradually. Don't shift gears and don't depress clutch. Steer in the direction of the skid. ..I made it. I'm still alive. Now back to Mr. Jones. Perhaps he had so much trouble simply because he panicked, not because he didn't know the safety precautions to take. Or perhaps he was too tired to remember the rules. Oh, my. There is another car in a ditch and it looks like the car belonging to that youngster I saw speeding by before. I wish everyone would learn the instruc-tions for driving under bad weather conditions. It would be better for them if they would! |
