Reading Group Compiles List |
||||||||||
| At the second meeting of the newly-formed interschool Reading Program Strategy committee, it was resolved to put out a list of books each year to send to homes, bookstores, and libraries. This list will consist of books recommended for extra-curricular reading or for selection in compiling a home library. The purpose of this committee, as told by Mr. Herman L. Rider, principal, is to "Coordinate all phases of reading, and provide motivation and purpose methods for putting the program into effect." In pursuing this goal the committee seeks to determine what words should be included in a basic vocabulary list for each subject, and what books students should be advised to read. The committee seeks to interest Mainites in reading and reading development, for it realizes that good reading skills are a definite help in college and an asset throughout life. |
Maine East and Maine West are two of the first schools in the country to have such a program. Reading development is one of the phases in the improvement of general instruction. The results which can be obtained are almost unlimited. The members of this committee are Mr. Robert Barker, chairman and English teacher at Maine East; Mr. Earle Wiltse, superintendent of schools; Mr. Ralph Frost, Jr., assistant superintendent; Mr. Milo S. Johnston, principal at Maine East; Mr. Herman L. Rider, principal at Maine West; Mr. George Giles, psychometrist; Mr. Charles Foreman, science department chairman, Maine East; Mr. Daniel Holbrook, language department chairman, Maine West; and Mr. Norman Ladd, mathematics department chairman, Maine West. The student body will also be represented at each meeting by students from various organizations. |
