Coach Predicts Good Year for Grapplers

"Wrestling may someday be the most popular sport in high school." Coach Richard Carlini welcomed the approaching wrestling season with this prediction. Welcome also, a n d more important, are any boys interested in joining one of this school's wrestling teams.

Officially started a few weeks ago, the wrestling squads have a count of 115 members. Of these, there are four teams, the varsity, junior varsity, sophomores, and freshmen. All are scheduled for conference meets this winter.

Four lettermen, Tom Carlin, Dick Geisler, Bob Jonas, and Chuck Novak, will enhance West's chances for a high finish in conference standings this season. From these four, Carlin and Jonas wrestled last year in the Illinois State tournament.

Wrestlers at Maine West this year will find inter-squad competition very tough. Thanks to a growing popularity among the student body, wrestling team membership has zoomed, making the bid for top wrestler in each class of weight a tough position to win. Problems, if any, resulting from the large turnout this season, will not be solved by cutting, for no boy is ever cut from the wrestling team. This especially takes effect with the freshmen and sophomores.

"It is too bad that there are still some people who do not I realize how exciting a wrestling match can be for the spectators. It is these people whom we want to interest in wrestling this year."

The Maine West matmen will wrestle in their first conference meet on November 26 1 against Grant high school. This I meet is at Grant in Lake Coun-ty. First home meet is a non-conference meet against Evanston.
