| "Plans to include social activities for the members of Sigma Chi Sigma, newly formed reading club, were discussed at a meeting of Student Council presidents and members of both Maine East and Maine West school administrations on November 30," commented Miss Marjory Johnston, director of the reading clinic at Maine West. The purpose of Sigma Chi Sigma is to honor those students who have exceptional reading ability and to give these students an opportunity to give and receive ideas on how to improve the reading program. |
During the week of December 19, tryouts will again be given for the 500 and 1,000 word keys, which are now being sent to various companies to be bid upon. The key will be in the shape of a book and have across its face Greek letters, which stand for Sigma Chi Sigma. Members who qualify for the 500 word key will receive the silver award and the 1,000 word per minute students will be presented with the gold award. Miss Roberta Iliff dean of Junior-Senior girls, recently remarked that with the volume of reading that is required for college and with the increasing difficulty of material presented, students must recognize the importance of good reading skills. |
