Grapplers Dump L. F. Scouts; Record Stands At Two-Two |
||||||||||
| A tough Wheaton team trounced Maine West's varsity grapplers last week by a score of 27-14 The meet, the first Interim Conference event of the year for both teams, evened the Warriors' overall record to two wins and two losses. Tom Lenhart, in the 95 lb. class, started the Warriors off on the right foot by downing his opponent 4 to 0, but the visiting Tigers bounced right back when West's Bob Jonas, at 103, dropped his match 0 to 2. Dan Hansen, at 112 lbs., came out on top with an 8 to 7 score, and Don Spyrison, at 120 lbs., fought his adversary to a draw. Tom Carlin, at 127 lbs., also took his match, 14 to 8, but thereafter the meet was dominated by Wheaton. Dick McGough, at 133 lbs., lost by a pin, the first of two made by the Tigers. Consecutive losses by Dave Kern and Ray Leonardson, at 138 and 145 lbs., respectively, put Wheaton in the lead to stay. Dick Geisler: was pinned, and when George Langegraff was edged by a score of 1 to 2, Wheaton had the meet clinched. Ray Boyd, at 180 lbs., came out on the short end of a 0 to 4 score, and rounding out the meet,' heavyweight Bob Petkus ended the night for the Warriors on a briefly successful note, by knocking off his opponent 2 to 0. |
The loss followed victories over Grant and Lake Forest, by 24 to 22, and 32 to 13 scores, respectively, and a 28 to 13 defeat by Evanston. At the same time the varsity was being defeated by Wheaton, the junior-varsity team was rolling over its Tiger counterpart by a score of 35 to 15. This victory upped their record to one win and one defeat, following an earlier 39 to 5 pasting at the hands of Evanston. Varsity matmen will face their next test when they travel to Glenbrook tomorrow for another important conference meet. The Warriors don't return home again until January 20. Looking ahead to the rest of the Warriors' schedule, varsity Coach Dick Carlini believes his grapplers have a rocky road in front of them. While acknowledging that there has been a lot of improvement since the beginning of the year, Coach Carlini pointed out that the team has been handicapped by the failure of several lettermen to return this year, in addition to an over-abundance of injury and illness. |
