Maine West's basketball Warriors are currently entrenched in third place in the Interim association, with two all-important games coming up this weekend. Tonight, West journeys to East Leyden to meet with the second place Eagles in a tossup match. Tomorrow evening, IC leader and sixth-state ranked Prospect puts its 14-0 record against Freeman's cagers.
The Warriors have won three of their last seven ball games, including two out of three in the Interim conference. Here are the scores to those encounters.
Maine West-50, Wheaton.53
Maine West-62, Clinton-65
Maine West-68, Jacksonville-58
Maine West-51, Lincoln-54
Maine West-61, Anna-Jonesboro-59
Maine West-62, Proviso West-56
Maine West-59, Grant-64
Maine suffered its first conference setback against Wheaton, 53-50, December 17. Warriors Keith Connolly and Bruce Shriver led West with 16 and 14 points, respectively. In Maine's opening game in the Pontiac holiday tourney, the Warriors lost by three points to the eventual winner
of the classic, Clinton. Shriver's 19 tallies and John Reese's 13 kept West in the contest until the final second. The meeting with Jacksonville proved to be Maine's easiest foe in the tournament. Guard Doug Halpenny popped in 20 points to lead the Warriors, with Shriver right behind with 19. The loss to Lincoln knocked West out of the running for the consolation championship. Scoring leader for the Westmen was 6 foot 2 inch Connolly who dropped in six baskets and nine free throws for 21 markers.
Maine West won the trophy for consolation third place by edging a strong Anna-Jonesboro five, 61-59, in a last second thriller. The Warrior's first game after Christmas was with conference foe Proviso West, last Friday. West easily won the contest, 62-56. The follow-ing night, Maine journeyed to Grant for a match with the tall, sharp-shooting Bulldogs. West kept pace with the upstate school, leading through the first two and one-half quarters. But the loss of Rowlee and Connolly by fouls, coupled with precisioned-like-manner of the Bulldogs, proved to be the Warriors downfall, 64-59.
