Gymnasts Top West Leyden |

| Maine West's gymnastics squad, headed by coach Sidney Drain and four lettermen, face East Leyden in an Interim League meet tonight at 7 p.m. at home. The Warrior musclemen have a one win, one loss record in Interim competition. The gymnasts have split in their last two meets, downing the Interim's West Leyden, 69 1/2 62 1/2, in a meet before the Christmas break, and falling to the Proviso West Panthers, 84 1/2 47 1/2, last Friday in another Interim meet. West previously had lost to Evanston, Niles, and State-champs Arlington. Facing West Leyden, the Mainites had four of the six possible first placings, plus half of the six seconds. There are six events with six positions in each and the Warriors won four of the events. Led by |
junior Tom Janssens who took first, West took the win, 14-8, on the trampoline. Junior Jim Lunetto took first on the side horse, and West took another 14-8 event victory. Leyden took the horizontal bar competition, 16-6, but West came closer, 10-12, on the parallel bars. Sal DeFalco, junior, took the first slot on the still rings, and Maine won the event, 12 1/2 9 1/2. Bill Downing, also a junior, grabbed the first in the tumbling competition and led the way to the Warrior event win, 13-9, and the meet victory, 69 1/2 62 1/2. Against the Panther gymnasts, trampoline was the only event won by West. Bill Downing, Tom Janssens, and Bill Hattory placed second, third, and fourth to rack up the winning margin of points in the event, 12-10. |
