WEST'SPORTS |
||||||||||
| by AL 'N ED Warrior coach Gaston Freeman's bucketmen have one of their roughest cage weekends in store for them starting with tonight's battle at East Leyden; tomorrow night the Westmen collide with the Foundry road Knights from Prospect high. Both games will be prefaced by West's solid jay-vee squad. In case any West Mainite cannot make it to Prospect's fieldhouse by 8 p.m. Saturday, the second best thing to do would be to tune in at 88.5 on the FM radio dial to hear WMTH's live broadcast of the encounter. Jim Brennan, John Schafer, and Dan Wiberg will be on hand with the play-by-play; West's Student Council supplied the funds for the game broadcast. WMTH already is on the air with all of West's home contests, with the next broadcast coming on Jan. 20, next Friday. West meets Wilowbrook's Warriors in another varsity and J-V Interim encounter. |
West's recent loss to Niles on the mats was a four-way Maine loss. The varsity was walloped, 45-3, but the jay-vees also followed with another loss, 44-8, and the sophs were set back, 39-5, as were the yearling Braves, 43-13. On the soph level, undefeated Rich Battles took West's only points on a win by pin in the heavyweight slot. Another undefeated soph who goes for coach William Barringer, Art Rahn, was unable to wrestle. One of the star Warrior swimmers has been put on a diet by coach Harold Baer. It seems that those mermen can't take all that "butterin' up." The tankers have only one win so far this season. Commenting on their recent 56-30 loss at Proviso West, Baer asserted that "the score may look bad, but we actually lost by about six-tenths of a second." He was referring to the closeness of several of the events. Basketball player Mike Rowlee currently stands sixth in Interim League scoring with 44 points. Rowlee, though, has played in one less contest than the top five boys as West already has had to sit out one night as the other six Interim teams were doing battle. |
