Navy Selects New Officers |
||||||||||
| Three boys from Maine West have been chosen for the NROTC scholarship. These three are Dick Geisler, Tom Kinder, and Bob Olson, all seniors. The NROTC program is the Navy Reserve Officers Training corps. The program is sponsored by the Navy and it will pay for tuition and books at any one of the 52 colleges where NROTC units are located. On top of this, the Navy will give the midshipmen $50 a month for personal expenses. The students took the aptitude test last December 10. The test was four hours long and covered everything from word meaning to abstract reasoning. On January 24, the boys had a thorough physical check-up at an office in downtown Chicago. With the physical, questionnaires and interviews were also given. |
The three boys are able to choose their own college and can enter as long as they are accepted by the college admission office. There are only a few restrictions on the subjects to be taken. The only naval training at college is a two-hour naval science course on Saturday mornings. During the summer months, the future officers spend their time learning naval and combat tactics. During the summer months, the boys spend their time on a ship as an ensign (second lieutenant) with officer's pay and officer's quarters. When they are finished with college, the boys are commissioned as ensigns and start their career as navy officers. Dick was overheard saying, "The aptitude test was rough, but the interviews and physicals seemed very easy." |
