| By AL 'N ED Coach Richard Carlini's grapplers will enter the Prospect District Wrestling meet, to be held next Friday and Saturday. A record number of 168 schools are entered in the State-wide competition, and some of the schools competing at Prospect include Maine East, East Leyden, Elmwood Park, the host school, and Maine West, along with several other squads. WEST'S SOPH MATMEN have compiled a six-six season record to date. Coach William Barringer's team looks to have a solid chance to finish above .500 per cent. On the soph basketball front, the Warriors are currently leading the Interim's Blue division. West is eight and three for the season, and has five wins and no losses in conference play. Maine's most recent win came at the hands of a cocky Glenbrook team, 58-45, as the Warriors scored 44 points in the second half. Coach Walt Hommerding said that the team played "a fabulous second half." and singled out Al Klehr, who was high scorer and led the second half rebounding, along with Rick DeKreek. He also mentioned John Aegerter, along with Gary Wilson, the team's sixth and seventh men, who played good ball when first-stringer Bill Dautel was hurt in the first minute of play. |
Six foot, six inch freshman center Joe Wehlacz led Coach Bob Schmidt's five to a 53-44 victory over the Spartans Saturday. The frosh are eight and two for the season, and also lead the Interim with five wins against no losses. According to Schmidt, the team is showing an "improvement" in each game. The Warrior frosh-soph swimmers just recently picked up a "free" win at the hands of East Leyden. The Eagles been moving sophs up to varsity and back down too many times, breaking Interim League rules, and had to forfeit nine soph meets; the Eagles had beaten West, 44-42, early in December. Playing Intramural basketball, six teams still are undefeated. Seniors Richards, Tillmans, and Day, plus junior Skeppstrom, soph Wasmund, and frosh Rybarczyk have yet to lose a game. Coach Miley Hotchkiss is in charge of West's IM pro gram. The faculty downed the GAA's all-star team in two out of three games held after school last week. All star team members were Pat Stein, Kem Lemke, Lynn HoIm, Barb Manny, Karen Barrett, Judy Matz, Jane Mountford, and Kathy Gladi, Faculty members included Miss Clark, Miss Bovenmyer, Miss Buck, Miss Engen, Miss Melnik, Miss Thompson, Miss Pierce, and Mrs. Edson. |
