Practice What We Preach

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal ......

These well known words, written by Thomas Jefferson, are the basis of this free nation. They also form the basic idea of National Brotherhood week.

"All men are created equal"

The revolutionary patriots, Abraham Lincoln, and men who served in the wars, all fought for this principle; many died. A few people dedicate their lives to creating freedom and equality, while the rest of us sit back and watch.

National Brotherhood week will provide sermon and editorial topics, and poster and campaign titles, but after all the rah-rah and good words, things will go on as
usual. Stone-throwing mobs will greet the first Negro family to move into a community. Riots will break out as whites and Negroes are commanded by federal law to attend classes together. People will continue to look down their noses at others who are of a different race, religion, or color.

National Brotherhood week holds no meaning unless it becomes a way of life. We cannot preserve our national freedom if we permit individual freedom to be practiced only one week in the year.

All men are created equal"

Do we know what this means? Do we believe it?

We must if we are to endure as a free people -
