Bucketmen Meet Top IC Teams At Home

Currently spotted fourth in the Interim League basketball standings, Maine West's basketmen have lost two of their last three encounters, although coming out one and one in Interim play.

Tonight and tomorrow night Coach Gaston Freeman's cagers meet East Leyden and Prospect at home in Interim games. Both schools stand above West in the conference basketball race; the Warriors have a five and four Interim record and stand in fourth place in the seven-team league. The Westmen are now nine and 10 for the season.

Scores of the last three games are:

Maine West 51, Wheaton 65.
Maine West 69, Proviso West 54.
Maine West 60, Barrington 73.

Playing before the varsity games, Maine West's jay-vees are currently tied for number one in the Interim J-V race. West bounced to the top by upsetting Wheaton, 49-47, in a thrilling overtime, and maintained their hold by trouncing the Proviso West's Panthers last week, 77-32.
The host PW Panthers held to a tie, 13-13, in the first period of play, but fell behind from there on as the West quintet went on to win, 69-54.

Bruce Shriver '61, scored 25 points for the night's high and West's high for the season to date. Keith Connolly '61, followed closely with 22 points. Other Warriors in the contest included Rick Warnicke '62, Doug Halpenny '61, Mike Rowlee '61, John Reese '61, Ron March '61, Bruce Murdock '61, Bob Lorentz '62, Al Waters '63. The whole West bench entered the game.

Rebounding statistics showed the Warriors snaring 20 rebounds against Wheaton, 22 against Proviso, and 16 against the Broncs of Barrington. High rebound man against the Tigers was Rowlee with six, against Proviso - Rowlee with five, and against Barrington - Shriver with five.

Against both Proviso and Barrington, Maine West was hot from the floor. Freeman's five hit on 25 of 49 field goal attempts for 51 per cent against the Panthers, and followed with 18 of 40 against the Broncs for 45 per cent. Shriver alone against Proviso had eight of nine field goal attempts for 89 per cent. Shriver's points came on upward-sweep shots from under the bucket. Connolly also hit for 10 of 17 tries for almost a 60 percentage for the game.
