Title IX Rules Gym Classes

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." In short, the previous passage from Title IX means co‑ed classes and equality in girls' sports.

Girls' sports have always been second to boys, but now with Title IX the program is on the rise. One of the biggest controversies the coaches are upset about is the fact that, in some cases, boys' coaches get paid almost three times as much money per year as a girls' coach does for doing the same amount of work.

But the money isn't what students are worried about. All around the halls you hear girls saying, "That coach is gonna

kill us," or "How do the guys do it?" On the other end of the stick, guys are always saying things like, "I lapped this one girl seven times when we were running in the track today," or "They can't do even one push up without falling on the faces; they have to do them on their knees!"

Of course, there are the people who love co‑ed gym. They get a chance to be with friends they might not normally see and to laugh at one another in the flattering gym suits. They're out to have a good time and make the best of a situation. You've probably heard these people complaining about co‑ed gym because the locker rooms and showers aren't coed, too.

But face it, whether you like it or not, co‑ed gym and Title IX are very much a part of the present and future.
