Soccer Team Undefeated

The Maine West varsity soccer team started their season Sept. 9 winning twice.

The Warrior kickers defeating Hersey in a close game, 1‑0. The lone goal was scored by newcomer Kevin Martin playing the left wing. Although this is Martin's first year, his speed should help the team‑a lack of experience being his only fault. An excellent performance was turned in by junior goalie Todd Wielgos.

The varsity played their first home game under the lights, Sept. 15, against Maine North. The Norsemen fell victim to a tough Warrior defense losing 2‑1. Bill Schutz scored for West in the second period. With just over one minute to play, and the score tied at one apiece, Martin scored his second goal of the year to cap a 2‑1 defensive struggle.

On the sophomore level, the kickers lost their first game by a score of 1‑1. In the second match, though, the Warrior sophomore team defeated Maine North by a score of 3‑1. On Sept. 15, the kickers tied a strong Niles North team by a score of 1‑1. Coach Steve Holmbeck thinks the team should have a good year if they play up to the talent they have.

Both varsity and sophomore have upcoming games against Forest View and a tough Evanston squad.

On Sept. 15 the Warriors defeated Niles North in a close game by a score of 2‑1.
