History Award Winners Named

The Social Science Department has announced the names of this year's nine American Legion Constitution Contest finalists. Also named are the 1979 Boy's and Girl's State representatives.

The Constitution Contest is an annual event with the top two scorers in an oral final examination receiving monetary awards. In order to qualify for the final, the student must score high in a written exam given to all seniors, as well as anyone else who may wish to participate. James Bethards, John Defenbaugh, Steve Hines, Camilla Mencinger, Robert Niemcyzk, Yvonne Pytlik, Jeff Skinner, Vicky Sroczynski, and Ed Williams comprise this year's finalists. Yvonne was announced the $200 winner and Steve won the $100 second prize.

This contest has been part of the Maine tradition for 43 years. The LRC displays a plaque which lists the names of all winners since West has been open.

Daniel Tortorelli and Antoinette Christ have been named Maine West's Illinois Boy's and Girl's State representatives. The American Legion sponsors this nationwide program which allows both winners to attend summer programs teaching practical politics and citizenship. The Legion will pay all expenses for these students to attend. The Junior Class currently taking United States history voted from a ballot to choose their representatives. Alternates who will attend if the winners are for some reason unable to are Daniel Bonaguidi and Ruth Dalski.

All of the Maine Township High Schools currently participate in this program.
