Juniors Take Paradise Trip

Juniors were recently allowed to purchase "Two Tickets to Paradise" for $6. In return they received three hours of dancing and refreshments.

Upon arrival at gate R‑211, here at Maine West, the couples were greeted by a stewardess guarding the door of a huge airplane mural. After giving their tickets to her, they were allowed passage to the plane. Once inside, each person was given a lei by a beautiful Hawaiian attendant. The decor in the auditorium consisted of Tiki gods, palm trees, and a small pond. This gave an overall Polynesian appearance.

This bizarre tale did actually occur as the Junior Class held their Junior Prom, May 5, in the auditorium. Tickets for the prom were authentic looking copies of airline tickets, stating flight number, gate, date, and arrival and departure time. The musical group was entitled "Crash." Class president Kathy Bowersox was quoted as saying, "They were a very good group and were enjoyed by all."

The band played all types of music including rock, soft music for slow dancing, as well as a polka or two. They also took only one short break in the middle of their set. The refreshments were served by members of Student Council and teachers. They included a number of different foods such as cheese and crackers, brownies, and other delectable delicacies. Fruit punch was also served.

Doreen Schmidt was the prom committee chairperson and should be commended for a job well done as well as Cathie Becker for being ticket chairperson. The two Junior Class sponsors are Mr. William Gartke and Ms. Elizabeth Reed. Much planning and preparations were put into this dance by these people and others, and the turnout of about 150 people showed that it was a success.
