The Maine West girls' track team, on the strength of two winning entries and a total of 23 points, placed fourth in the 17‑team District Meet held at Prospect High School on May 12.
The excellent performances by Jymette Bonnivier played a major role in both of the Warriors' district titles. First, she teamed up with Laura Derken, Judy Gielarowski, and Maureen Moeller to win the 880‑medley relay. Jymette ran an excellent 59.5 quarter mile leg of the relay to qualify for the state meet in Charleston. The winning time of 1:52.30 was a new school record.
Thirty minutes later Jymette outran 33 of the best half‑milers in the northwest suburban area to win the 880 in 2:16.9, shattering her own old school record by several seconds. Lory Tonske narrowly missed qualifying for the state meet when she finished third in the two‑mile run. Lory's time of 12:12 set a new school record.

Maine West's conference championship 880‑relay team and last year's district champions ran their best time of the year but had to settle for third place behind Hersey and Palatine. Sprinter Judy Gielarowski, busy running on three relay teams, also jumped 15'8" to place fourth in the long jump.
Maine's last points were provided in the finals when senior standouts Shelly Carpentier and Maureen Moeller both qualified for the finals in the 220. Maureen finished third and Shelly eighth to close out the Warriors' scoring.
The Warriors ended their dual meet schedule when they traveled to New Trier West on May 15. This meet was described as a "little state meet" because it will warmup the state qualifiers and give many underclassmen an opportunity to set personal best marks for the season.
