Softball Team To Host Highland Park

The Maine West girls' softball season has started and their schedule for the rest of the season is going to be very busy. So far, three of the scheduled games have been cancelled due to the weather conditions.

Two of these games were made up on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week against Deerfield and Waukegan East. Today, the team will play Highland Park at home. The game will begin at 4:30 and will be played on the girls' own new softball diamond which is on Oakton Street by the parking lot.

The girls on this year's varsity team are Lori Cole, Doreen DeRosa, Lee Fuchs, Karen Habetler, Denise Huntoon, Robin Johnson, Tina Koonce, Donna Logisz, Debbie Mienke, Jan Schimmel, Cindy Sniezek, Kim Stryker, and Jean Tookey.

The three returning varsity players are Karen Habletlter, who has been on varsity for three years, Debbie Mienke, varsity for four years and Jan Schimmel, varsity for two years.

This year's JV players are Karen Clausen, Karen English, Diane Fillipp, Linda Ladendorf, Betty Olen, Debbie Peters, Maureen Schooley, Karen Sherwood, Carol Stube, Sharon Weiszmann, and Jean Zabroske. The team's coach again this year is Ms. Barb Jones.

When asked how she thought about the team this year, Coach Jones said, "We finished second in the league last year; but with so many new players and no games having been played, I have no idea as of yet." She is "optimistic" about the team now, but she feels the team will be tough in two or three years after the girls have had more experience.
