Five Maine West Girls Participate at MTU Summer
'Women in Engineering' Program

"Women in Engineering" was the title of the summer program that caught the attention of Linda Benton '79, Sally Clayton '79, Kathy Jacobson '79, Laura Paulin '79, and Yvonne Pytlik '79 last spring. The girls heard about the program from their physics teachers and sent in an application.

The program was very selective in choosing the girls that they thought had high enough potential to make the program worthwhile. Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan, was the site of the seminar. The seminar lasted one week. Companies from all over the country sponsored the girls making the cost for each girl only that of transportation to Houghton. Girls came from all over the nation.

The aim of the program was to introduce different facets of engineering to the participants. Each day the girls attended two seminars and laboratories. Guest

speakers from companies all over the country, all of whom were "Women in Engineering," gave lectures and assisted the girls in the labs. The labs consisted of working on circuits, setting up sound equipment, and tours, along with other activities.

The girls really enjoyed meeting people from different parts of the country; some came from as far as upper state New York, while others were as close as Maine East. One girl commented, "I was surprised to find that the most interesting and different people were the ones who live the closest." Many of the girls exchanged addresses in hopes of hearing from each other as to who has decided to go into what field of engineering and where they are planning on going to college.

MTU brought together 100 girls from all walks of life and showed them how close people can get working together on engineering programs.
