Varsity Grid Men Burned in Last Two;
Soph. Squad Remains Undefeated

The Maine West varsity football team let their last two games slip through their hands in the final minutes. Two weeks ago they were defeated by Waukegan East, 18‑14. Last week the Warriors also lost, this time, 21‑16, to Elgin.

The first play of the game against Waukegan East turned out to be disastrous for Maine West. The opening kickoff was returned 87 yards for a touchdown by the Bulldogs, putting the Warriors in an early hole. The Bulldogs attempt at a two point conversion failed, and the Warriors trailed 6‑0.

Waukegan East wasn't ready to quit either. The same running back that returned the opening kick scored again, this time on a 60‑yard run from scrimmage. The score was now 12‑0. Before Maine West was able to score, the same player ran for 70 yards. Three plays later the Bulldogs scored and took a commanding 18‑0 lead.

Gary Crossland brought the Warriors back with a 65‑yard touchdown run making the score 18‑43. Midway through the fourth quarter Warrior quarterback Mark Voss found Perry Carlini in the end zone with a 16‑yard pass to close the Bulldog lead to 18‑12. West executed the two point conversion beautifully, and the score was 18‑14.

The game became even more exciting when the Warriors recovered a fumble at the Bulldog 10‑yard line with 44 seconds remaining in the game. The Warriors tried to score by the run, and after two unsuccessful attempts the clock ran out and Maine West lost, 18‑14.

Last Friday Maine West got off to another bad start, this time against Elgin. Before the Warriors could even run a play from scrimmage they were trailing, 13‑0. Voss scored on a 1‑yard run in the second half, but the Warriors were unable to score again and lost, 21‑16.

The sophomore team, however, has been victorious by overwhelming margins in their last two games. The Warriors won over Waukegan East, 16‑0, and trounced Elgin, 23‑0, thus keeping their undefeated record.
