The Maine West Cross Country team continued their winning ways at Libertyville on Sept. 23. The varsity placed an excellent third out of the 12 schools in the huge meet.
Top runners for West were Jukka Kalho, Kent Towler, Bob Fisher, Dave Ahlman, and Dwight Bohne. A field of 84 runners participated in the contest. The junior varsity also placed third in the Libertyville meet. Frank Hruban, Kevin Bayer, and Valente Garza all turned in excellent performances for the Warriors.
On the sophomore level Maine West once again placed third. In a field of over 100 runners, Mike Schachte finished third and Jerry Kliner finished ninth. The freshmen came in second place against Libertyville with Kurt Danielson placing third and Herb Vogt placing nineteenth competing against over 100 runners.

On Sept. 26 the varsity cross country team annihilated their opponents. Niles West, Glenbrook North, and the Chicago teams of Kennedy, Faragut, and Hubbard made up the opposition. The West runners won every event including the girls' part of the meet.
The girls' cross country team placed fifth at Libertyville with Lory Tonsky finishing second in a close race. Lory, a sophomore, was edged out by one second in an exciting final stretch. Coach William Barringer says Lory probably would have won the race if it had not been for a sore ankle which has kept her from conditioning. Lory is one of the bright young prospects of the future for the Maine West girls' cross country team.
In the meet at Niles West, Lory won the race; and Karen George finished second. Other top runners were Karen Schatter, Nancy Lowenhurst, Diane Moroca, and Kathy Kardacz.
