West Kickers Finish Conference Champs

The Warrior soccer team clinched its first conference title since 1974 winning four of its last six games. This brought the kickers' record to 8‑6‑1 with a conference record of 4‑1‑1.

A tough defensive battle was played against Maine East with Jim Carlstrom scoring the lone goal on a header with Joe Cavalier getting the assist. The winning tally did not come until the final three minutes of the game to make the score 1‑0.

Playing Glenbrook North, the Warriors won 2‑0 with Cavalier scoring one unassisted goal and one off of a pass from Kevin Martin. The kickers beat both Niles West and Glenbrook South by scores of 2‑1. Florenciano Avilez and Bill Schutz scored against Niles West with Mike Perez and Avilez scoring against Glenbrook.

Lake Forest was held scoreless in the first half but exploded for three goals in the second half to shut out West, 3‑0. Maine South likewise shutout the team, 1‑0.

Leading scorer for the season was first year man Martin with four goals. Close behind were Avilez, Perez, and Schutz, all with three. Scoring a pair apiece were Carlstrom, Cavalier, and Jeff McGlone. Outstanding defense was played all year long by Dennis Hanson, Rolf Hrbacek, Ray Matkovic, and Mike Unger. Goalie Todd Wielgos recorded five shutouts on the season.

The Warriors finished conference champs by defeating Maine East and Glenbrook North in close games. This year's season was a complete turnabout from last year when the team finished at the bottom of the league.
