West Harriers End Successful Season

All levels of Maine West's cross country team have completed their seasons. For all four levels on the boys' teams, and for the girls' team it was a successful season.

The freshman, sophomore, and junior varsity harriers have been busy for the past few weeks. At the Maine North Invitational on Oct. 27 all three levels finished in first place, out of 12 competing teams. Against seven other teams at the Maine East Invitational the junior varsity, sophomore, and freshman teams all finished in second place.

The girls' team has had a most successful season. At the Downers Grove meet on Oct. 28 Lory Tonske received the fifteenth medal out of 25 awarded. Two hundred‑nine girls finished this race. At the United States Track and Field Federation Meet held on Nov. 4 at Crystal Lake the girls finished twelfth out of 27 schools.

At the conference meet all levels were well represented. Varsity runners who placed well were Jukka Kallip, who finished third; Bob Fisher, who finished fourth; and Kent Towler, who placed eleventh. On the junior varsity level, Dwight Bohne finished second. Jerry Kleiner and Ron Nanstiel finished third and fourth respectively on the sophomore level. Kurt Danielson, a freshman runner, finished first and was named conference champion for freshmen. Other high scorers on the freshman level were Chris Walsh, second, and Herb Vogt, sixth. In the girls' race Lory Tonsky finished second, Karen George fifth, and Nancy Loewenherz ninth.

Maine West took first place in the 15team state district meet, took fourth at the state sectional and qualified for the state meet.

At the state meet on Nov. 11 in Peoria, the harriers finished twenty‑third out of 27 schools. Our top places were Kent Towler, seventeenth; Bob Fisher, one‑hundred‑forty‑sixth; Jukka Kallio, one-hundred‑forty‑seventh; Mike Schachte, one‑hundred‑fifty‑third; and Dave Ahlman, one‑hundred‑fifty‑ninth.
