Soccer Team Plays in Sectionals

In state tournament play the Warrior soccer team advanced to sectionals, farther than any previous West team. Going 3‑1‑1 in post‑season play, the kickers finished with an 11‑7‑2 overall record.

The first sub‑sectional game showed the team post an explosive 11‑0 triumph over St. Charles Borromeo. Rotating players constantly, the team displayed diversity with Joe Cavalier, Mike Perez, Bill Schutz, and Mike Unger all scoring two goals. Jim Carlstrom, Kevin Martin, and Tim Phillip added one apiece.

This total of 11 goals was the highest posted by West this season and also set a school record, the previous being nine. The St. Charles team started nine sophomores while the Warriors featured five underclassmen. Todd Wielgos recorded the shutout.

Hinsdale South was the next opponent on the agenda. The kickers similarly man‑handled them but not quite as decisively, winning 4‑2. Schutz added two more goals to his season total.

Maine South was the challenger in the first sectional game; and they emerged victorious, winning 1‑0. It was a very defensive game with the winning goal coming with two minutes left in the fourth five‑minute overtime period. The kickers had eight shots in the overtimes but could not connect for a tally.

Number one ranked Forest View was next in the round‑robin tournament, and West emerged, in what could have been called a victorious manner, tieing the Falcons, 1‑1. In a game filled with controversially called penalties, the Falcons went into halftime leading 1‑0. Almost immediately, upon resuming play, a Warrior player was ejected from the game, forcing them to play shorthanded for the entire second half. Rather than discouraging the players, this seemed to incite them as they dropped a barrage of shots on Forest View, finally resulting in a goal by Schutz. Early in overtime play, star center halfback, Jeff McGlone, sustained a broken leg. In four overtime periods neither team could score, resulting in the tie.

In a final sectional game, the kickers defeated Wheaton Christian, 1‑0. Carlstrom scored the goal on an 18‑meter indirect kick, placing the ball perfectly in the upper‑right hand corner of the net.

This was a rather successful season for first year Coach Ron Brown as the team finished conference champs. Jeff McGlone was all sectional, a designation equivalent to honorable mention allstate. McGlone was announced MVP of the team with Perez, Unger, and Wielgos being tri‑captains.
