The Maine West wrestling team lost its opener to Prospect High School on Nov. 22 at Prospect.
The 98‑lb. class featured a freshman from each school. Dave Klaver of West lost by a decision to Prospect's Jeff Fishback.
The 105 class was a battle between two juniors who met each other last year. Rick Spencer faced Jim Marshall and won by a decision.
The next match, 112, put the Warriors ahead as Sols Wainio decisioned Joe Donna; however, the Warriors lost their next three matches. Paul Praxmarer was pinned by Kevin Rossdeufecher in the second period; Dan Wartalski lost to Roger Baron by decision; and Shawn Kelleher was decisioned by Mark Ambrosio.
In the next class Kevin Fang settled for a draw as Bob Cherwin scored a last second reversal. At 145, Paul Romano of Maine West was pinned by Dan Lessner.
At 155, West's Kevin Gray faced Mike Ward. These wrestlers have met each other twice before, and each had one victory. This time Gray was pinned in the third period.
In the 167‑lb. class, Warrior Vince Lombardo lost to Darrell Hopper by a last period reversal. Tony Cavazos lost by desision to Bryan Berry of Prospect in the 185‑lb class.
Warrior heavyweight Rich Schulte pinned Joe Bopp after compiling a 12‑2 lead in the second period.

The J.V. won by a huge margin of 56‑8. The Warriors stacked up seven pins and a superior decision. West matmen pinners were John Storm, Jeff Maxwell, Valente Garza, Brian Opfer, Steve Hilhard, Dennis Langer, and Mike Dini. Bob Barringer ended with a 16‑1 decision, and Paul Zurlo also won by a decision.
The Warrior freshmen opened their season with a win. The score was 39‑29.
West's pinners won the meet as the team lost 6 of 13 matches. Pinners were Jack Arrigo, Rob Sharbaugh, Rich White, Bob Spencer, and John Whitney. Nick Pianetto scored, the only decision for West.
Dec. 8 was a disappointment for the varsity matmen as they lost to Waukegan East by a score of 15‑30.
The J.V., squad 1, also lost to Waukegan East. The only Warrior pinners were Paul Zurlo and Ron Nidbow. The J. V., squad 2, was defeated by Waukegan by a score of 35‑21.
The freshman Warriors lost to Waukegan by a score of 57‑14. This had only one decision; the rest were matchpins.
On Dec. 9 the Warrior's varsity matmen faced Wheaton North at Fenton. They lost to Wheaton North, 47‑76, but won over Holy Cross. The junior varsity went to Holy Cross and faced Fenton, Wheaton North, and Holy Cross. The Warrior win over Fenton was superior. The final score was 60‑9. The J.V. also won over Holy Cross. The final score in this meet was 46‑12. However, Wheaton North defeated the Warriors, 38‑24.
