College: Only One Choice

Only four months left! The year is more than half over. What is going to happen to all of us when our four years at Maine West are over? Of course, we will be going to college; that is what is expected. But college is only one of the many opportunities after high school.

Some type of education after high school is important and with most careers necessary. In the job market today are people ‑an over abundance of people. It has been estimated by the time the Class of 1979 is ready to enter the job market three persons will be competing for the same job. In such a competitive atmosphere, skills and education become very important.

College is by far the most popular and widely used means of gaining further education and knowledge. Last year out of all the Maine Township High Schools 67 percent of all the graduating seniors went on to college.

Included in the number of the seniors who went on to college are those who enrolled in a trade school or a vocational training program. This type of education prepares a person for a particular job or industry.

Another possible way to further an education, while earning money, is a work training program. In this way, it is possible to learn new skills while actually working and being paid for the work done.

No matter what route we choose, it is important in today's job market to have the education needed. As the year goes on and the end approaches, let all of us try to decide and study the type of education that would best fit our plans for the future.
