Speech and Debate Teams Score High

On Saturday, Jan. 13, the Maine West Speech Team defeated 24 other schools. Maine West won trophies in all events including group interpretation.

"The Chevrolet Garden," performed by Marcie Bakker, Mark Halverson, Eileen Terry, Andy McCune, and Kendel Okon took third place. The following students won first place in their events: Yvonne Pytlik and Karen Eschenbach, both tied for first in extemporaneous speaking. Sheila Wall and Julie Farrell took first in humorous duet acting. Sue Ragusin won in original oration, while Kathey Bashem took first in prose reading.

Students placing second were Kathey Bashem in verse, Janice Johnson in Humorous Interpretation, and Sue Kadlec in oratorical exclamation. Others were Sheila Wall in original comedy, and a team of Maureen O'Malley and Tim Dadabo in dramatic duet acting.

At North Chicago, on Saturday, Jan. 6, the Speech Team was nudged out of first place by one point. Maine West placed second, while Fenton took first

with 299 points, Maine West having 298. This was the first tournament all season in which Maine West had not taken first.

Leading the team in scoring were Kathey Bashem in prose reading, first place; and Maureen O'Malley and Tim Dadabo, took second in dramatic duet acting. Yvonne Pytlik took second in extemporaneous speaking, while Melissa Pytlik took second in prose reading. Mike Bashem took third in radio speaking and also took fourth, along with Janice Johnson, in dramatic duet acting. Placing fourth in original comedy was Mark Halverson.

At Dundee, on Dec. 18, the Speech Team made it five in a row. The team won first place in competition with 27 schools. Trophy winners at Dundee were Tim Dabado and Maureen O'Malley in dramatic duet acting, first place. Kathey Bashem placed first in verse, while Judy Rompf took second in dramatic interpretation. Sheila Wall placed third in original comedy.
