Fencers Approach Season End,
May Enter State Tournament

Maine West's fencing team, the only co‑ed team at Maine West, is drawing to a close, with only four weeks left. The state tournament on Feb. 16 will make the end of the season.

At Marshall High School, in Chicago, on Jan. 9, Maine West lost 18‑0; however, the JV team won with a score of 10‑8. High scorers from that match were Jorie Downing, 3‑0, and Debbie Davis, also 3‑0, both from the junior varsity. At Gordon Tech on Dec. 19, Maine West lost 13‑5, and JV, 12‑6. High scorer from that match was Pat Clark, 2‑0, from the varsity team.

On Dec. 11, the varsity lost, 13‑5, and the JV tied at New Trier West. High scorers for that tournament were Pat Clark, 2‑1, Sue Rieck, 2‑1, both from varsity, and Frank Machaj, 3‑0, from JV At Maine South the JV team won, 11‑7, while the varsity lost, 13‑5, High scorers from that day were Holly Hamilton, 2‑1 and Jorie Downing, 2‑0.

Finally, at New Trier East, on Nov. 28, both West teams lost. High scorers from that competition were Pat Clark, 3‑0, and Debbie Davis, 3‑0. Ms. Karen Kenyon, the coach of the team said, "The Junior Olympic trials are coming up, and I think some of the fencers will do very well." The last home competition was held on Feb. 5, in the Rider Gym.
